"Traditional Artistic Crafts" Olympiad - 26th edition
The ASTRA Museum, an institution whose actions are made possible by funding from the Sibiu County Council, is hosting the 26th edition of the national phase of the "Traditional Artistic Crafts" Olympiadfrom 20 to 23 July 2023. The event is organised by the ASTRA Museum in partnership with the Sibiu County School Inspectorate. This year's edition brings together 200 participants (students, teachers, cultural promoters and artists) from 28 counties of the country, including Sibiu and Bucharest, but also from abroad - Republic of Bulgaria, Republic of Moldova (three groups from the districts of Răuțel, Dondușeni, Călărași) and Mexico.
"Visitors will be able to participate in demonstrative and interactive workshops in beekeeping, woodcutting, quilting, beadwork, bracelet sewing and weaving, canvas painting and Mexican cardmaking. In addition to workshops, there will be sports, performances, folklore and exhibitions. The Olympiad is an interactive event. On Sunday 23 July, at 17:00, the closing and award ceremony will take place, when the greatness of our folk costume will be displayed in all its splendour", said Elena Găvan, ASTRA Museum, museum specialist.

Students entered in the competition compete in 37 craft techniques, such as: vertical and horizontal loom weaving, embroidery, sewing, folk costume making, ornament making, doll making, shoe making, making tassels on basket, weaving, plant fibre weaving, crochet, knitting, artistic woodwork, wood carving, woodcutting, wood burning, linocutting, metalworking, stone engraving, painted furniture, making traditional toys, eggs painting, painting icons on glass and wood, naïve painting , modelling ceramics, pottery, pottery decoration, making masks, decorative art.
