Harvest Festival at ASTRA Museum
ASTRA Museum, an institution whose actions are made possible by funding from Sibiu County Council, is organising the event Harvest Celebrationwhich will take place on Sunday, 24 September 2023, from 10 am to 4 pm, at the Country Fair in the Open Air Museum in Dumbrava Sibiu. There will be 25 producers from Sibiu county and neighbouring counties. Their products and preserves on display include jams and syrups, fruit and vegetables, apple pressed juice, grape pressed juice, wine, dairy products, cakes and pies, as well as beekeeping products, sauces and many other delicacies.
"Autumn brings an abundance of fruit and vegetables into our homes, which we still prepare according to recipes passed down in the family. On this joyous day, the Country Fair space will be decked out as befits a worthy man's household on the threshold of autumn. Through the prism of the producers and especially through the fruits of their labour, visitors will be able to get to know the local resources and the recipes learned in their home villages. The event will also include gastronomic workshops with dishes featuring vegetables and fruit in abundance: vegetable soup with veal and dumplings, stewed cabbage with sausages, zacusca and apple or plum pies. The dishes chosen are in keeping with the resources available this autumn: autumn cabbage is now starting to be cut from the fields on which the mist will soon begin to spread, and the capsicum pepper, bell pepper, aubergines and onions are all staple ingredients so often found in traditional dishes. Also on Sunday, there will be a gastronomic workshop illustrating the atmosphere of a shepherd's hut, part of a traditional sheepfold where the shephard prepare and transform milk into pastoral products: freshly curdled telema cheese, butter beaten from cream, and for tasting we will have mountain cheese ripened by the cold, hard air of our mountains, with the taste softened by the fir branches on which the butternuts were placed. The Harvest Festival visitors will have the opportunity to twist wicker twigs to make woven baskets, often used to store or transport fruit or vegetables. This interactive workshop will be organised under the supervision of a craftsman from Harghita County. During the event, participants will also have the opportunity to pick corn stalks, then to husk and sieve them, activities that are in keeping with the time when carts full of corn stalks used to proudly depart from the fields towards the courtyards waiting for them with wide open gates.
The event is part of the Country Fair: vegetable garden and landscape 2023.
