Spring activities at ASTRA Museum

From 1 March to 15 June 2023, the Section of Heritage Education and Interpretation, through the program called Museum Presents Itself, supports teachers and their students with activities to encourage and train responsible behaviour towards the natural environment aimed at facilitating the relationship between man and nature, responsible consumption, avoiding waste and reusing resources. The activities take place outdoors where workshop participants are invited to Discover Nature in the ASTRA Museum, to Put the Mill on the Map and to grow their own vegetables through Seasonal Activities in the Educational Garden.

We Discover Nature in the ASTRA Museum The forest communicates as we humans communicate with each other. Together we identify the species of trees in the museum (hornbeam, oak, Canadian pine, juniper, maple and fruit trees), discover whether a tree loves solitude or the company of other trees, discover the secrets that mosses and lichens growing on trees can share with us, and make tree prints and collages of forest items together.

Put the Mill on the map Five mills from the ASTRA Museum collection (wind, water and animal-drawn) will become, for 4 months, the "gateway of knowledge" to different geographical areas of our country. Dobruja is called "the land of winds", as they are present all year round, especially in the northern part of the region. The windmill in the village of Curcani, Constanta county, is the last example of this type to survive in Romania to this day and is a particularly valuable exhibit. The guided tour, where children discover new information such as the use of windmills powered by the forces of nature, is followed by a practical activity of making an interactive map with images of the windmills they discovered in the Open-Air museum.

Seasonal activities in the Educational Garden The Open Air Museum's Educational Garden facilitates seasonal activities for children every year, starting in March. We prepare the beds together, plant, water, weed, harvest, experiment and taste. We learn about different types of vegetables and herbs, we learn about compost, pollination, garden flowers, why earthworms appear in the garden and the role of the hedgehog (the garden doctor who feeds on various plant pests).
